Agreement between Russia and Abkhazia caused serious concern in Tbilisi

Vladimir Putin signed a comprehensive agreement with Abkhazia and promised a new financial aid, which, according to critics, accelerate the integration of Russia with the breakaway Georgian republic.

According to the agreement “on the alliance and strategic partnership” signed in Sochi on Monday, Abkhazia will coordinate its foreign, defense, economic and social policy with Moscow.

Georgia condemned the signing of the agreement and called it a step toward Russian “annexation of the occupied Georgian territories”.

According to Thomas de Waal, a senior researcher at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, an agreement with Abkhazia, apparently, became Russia's response to Georgia Association Agreement with the EU.

Agreement strengthened the tension in Tbilisi: Georgian opposition seized it to be a sign that the government does not take enough hard line towards Russia. An earlier version of the agreement, dubbed “The Alliance and integration,” put on the street thousands of protesters led by the opposition party United National Movement at the beginning of this month.

Previous and more provocative version of the document dealt with the “integration” with Russia and contained a proposal to speed up the passage of Russian requests for Abkhaz citizenship that would allow Russian to buy property. Both of these elements have been removed from later versions.
